CATastrophic Empty Cup card

We’re winding down to the end of the Winter Coffee Lovers Blog Hop – tomorrow is the final day! I kinda feel like this kitty today!20151217_090704W

I think the dog days of summer are matched by the kitty days of winter, don’t you?! >^.^<

This is one of the few snowy wintry items in my crafty stash. I only have it because I got it as blog candy from the very generous Tina. (Thanks again!) I fell in love with this cute little digi from Sami Stamps at the Cat Lovers Hop and it’s still on available for free HERE, if you’d like to get it and see the rest of the adorable Cats in Cups set she has. I like using dark copies of a die behind a light copy to give it a shaded edge. The frame around the sentiment that I made up and printed out are just the ends of the die cut off and adhered together.

20151217_090958W

Here’s a better angle to see the Wink of Stella on the snowflakes. Just a pinch for a nice finishing touch!

Oh, and I was looking through my photo gallery and found a picture I had taken a few weeks ago in anticipation of National Cocoa Day, but forgot to share:

20151124_140837W

I also wanted to try using STENCILS to sprinkle powdered sugar over cocoa for designs, but I got mixed results. Mostly because the cocoa was too hot and melted the sugar…

20151217_101445W

Those Cafe Mocha m&ms are AMAZING, by the way! Although my favorite seasonal treat are still Ghirardelli peppermint bark squares!!

We’re Like Tea Bags Card and Peppermint Spoons Experiment

Hello again! It’s time for a fun tea card for the Winter Coffee Lovers Blog Hop and the results of my experiment in making peppermint spoons:

20151213_153052W

A couple of weeks ago I saw a post about making your own peppermint spoons and since they ran out at Tuesday Morning, I decided to try it. You can read the instructions in original post on Jennifer’s blog HERE. She made hers in the oven, but I wanted to try them in the microwave. I also wanted just the bowl of the spoon as I usually use these for tea parties (see my post HERE, if you haven’t read about those yet) and the cups are small. So I smashed up a bunch of peppermint candies and filled my Wilton Silicone Candy Spoon Mold, putting some Celebrate It! Popsicle Sticks in some and leaving two 100% candy.

20151209_085420W

It took less than 20 seconds for the first one to start bubbling, and they each started

bubbling at different times, while the full one on the end never bubbled at all.

20151209_085744W

I kept adding more crushed candy a few seconds at a time, but the end results weren’t terrific. The one that never bubbled came out the best. The one next to it bubbled so much it lost its color and the bowls of the spoons ran on up the handles and wouldn’t look nice:

20151209_093128W

Now, my microwave is small, so it may not have the even distribution that a larger, more expensive model has, but I still recommend following the original instructions and making these in the oven! Now it’s time for me to take a break with my Chocolate Macadamia Nut tea and peppermint spoon dipped in chocolate and dunked in sprinkles!

20151213_153114W

One additional note for lovers of mint chocolate… My aunt told me about making brownies with a layer of Andes Creme de Menthe Chocolates – it sounded wonderful! Target had some brownie bites on sale and Andes chocolates were on sale, too, soooooo… If you put 1/2 a mint on a brownie bite and put it in the microwave 10-15 seconds… YUM!

Well, this IS supposed to be a CARD making post, so I’d best get to it, eh?! That fun wintry sea background was made by dry embossing soft aluminum.

20151212_151427W

I embossed the reverse side, then flipped it over and lightly sanded the raised areas to bring out the silvery white of the waves in the wintry sea.

20151212_151524W

I felt they needed a little bit more ‘foam’, so I added some Glass Bead Glitter Gel to the crests of the waves and even splashes some onto our intrepid penguins and their vessel. If you click on the picture you should be able to enlarge it and see the splashes.

20151213_153337W

I love that sentiment that we are all like tea bags: You don’t know how strong you are until you’ve been in a little hot water!

I can almost hear the penguins now:

Kowalski: Sir, How long do we stand here like this?

Skipper: Until we reach maximum coolness.

[beat]

Skipper: There it is!

Smile and wave, boys!

I Love Hanging Out With You + Blog Candy

Welcome back to another day of the Winter Coffee Lovers Hop! They say today is National Hot Cocoa Day… What DON’T they have a day for? Incredible! I guess Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts didn’t hear of it because there were no free offers like on National Coffee Day. lol!

I’m bringing back Newton the cat, who really loves his cocoa.. (And, unlike his breathing feline friends, he can safely have it.)

20151213_135056W

How do you like my Flour Sack Towel with those lovely cups? More on that in a bit. Meanwhile, let’s look inside this card, since I rarely decorate the insides…

20151213_135307W

Those Graphic 45 papers make great household decor, don’t you think? I love that these two stamp sets of Newton match perfectly for front and back pairing! Did you notice the picture of young Newton on the wall? >^.^< The scenery out the window is a picture I cut out of Florida Design’s Art Galleries Magazine. “That Day in the Glade” by Henry Von Genk III. It looks like a true winter’s day in South Florida.

Your Friendship Warms My Heart Card & Drinking Chocolate

Good evening and welcome back! I have been waiting weeks for just the right time to try an experiment and this evening was perfect. Who remembers Chantico drinking chocolate that Starbucks had a couple of years ago?! I was SO sad to see it go!! It reminded me of a drinking chocolate some friends from Spain brought that I’d fallen in love with. I have never come so close to duplicating that taste of practically drinking a chocolate bar until Chantico. Sigh.

A few weeks ago, in the blazing heat, my aunt was visiting and treated us to ice cream at Kilwins over by the beach. While browsing the shop, I found a bag of Kilwins Shredded Peruvian Chocolate for Drinking. I was ecstatic!! I was even more thrilled when my Aunt surprised me with a bag as a gift!! I’ve been waiting until it cooled down enough to try it and see if it really was similar to that wonderful drinking chocolate I remembered, and…. woo-hoo!!! If you’re a chocolate lover, especially a dark chocolate lover, I highly recommend you give it a try. I DID add extra sugar to cut the bitterness, but it’s still AMAZING!!

20151212_175751W

I’ve got to hurry and finish this post so I can get back to my chocolate.

Nope… I had to finish my chocolate first. Now I’m back to finish the post. Priorities!! : )

I think this card was a self portrait of me just a couple of seconds ago. lol!

Tea Party Card & Tips

Hello and welcome to The Cat’s Pajamas Winter Blog Hop and the Winter Coffee Lovers Blog Hop. Yes, you read right, it’s the COFFEE Loving Cardmakers who are organizing this hop, but this time with extra attention to the Tea and Cocoa drinkers, too. I fit into all categories. : )

So, I’m starting off with a tea party card. It’s a winter card because, here in South Florida, I only feel like having tea parties in the winter as the rest of the year it’s so hot I usually only want cold drinks. I see we might dip into the 60s next week with mid 70’s for highs. Finally! Yay! It’s also a winter card because several of my orchids bloom in winter, like this lovely lady:

20151210_234726W

20151210_210010W

Have you ever been able to enjoy the experience of a high tea, low tea or afternoon tea at a tea house? They’re becoming more and more popular and are quite a delightful indulgence!

On a more budget friendly scale, I love hosting tea parties for my friends and their kids and there’s always some kind of shenanigans going on, like on this card. : )

Speaking of tea parties — Who doesn’t love to play dress up and eat fancy food? Here are some of the yummy goodies at tea parties I’ve had recently (as always, you should be able to click the picture to enlarge it):

20151101_140644W

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I usually have lots of hats, boas, scarves and clunky necklaces on hand for everyone to dress up…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Sometimes there are extra little handmade gifts like the Kanzashi pins on the flowers and hats – everyone was allowed to choose one to take home.

I usually start with a blooming tea for show. So far, these have been much more fun to watch than to drink as I haven’t been wild about the flavor of the ones I’ve tried so far.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Once the show’s over, we quickly move on to the tiny sandwiches and quiches. Usually there are cucumber sandwiches, shrimp and cream cheese, and tiny quiches. Sometimes there are also chicken salad on croissants, bacon wrapped scallops and guacamole on Parmesan chips. I usually serve a fruit tisane with lunch.

20151101_133340W

The highlight of the party is always dessert! There are usually chocolate cups filled with cheesecake, strawberries dipped in Nutella, scones with lemon curd, and stroopwafles which can sit on top of your tea cup, melting the yummy honey or caramel inside. Sometimes there might be divinity, persimmon loaf, chocolates and other incredible goodies. A great dessert tea that most everyone loves is the chocolate macadamia nut tea. It’s fabulous by itself, but we recently tried it with mint spoons and it was incredible! I had trouble finding more mint spoons, so have been investigating making my own. More on that in a later post. (HERE.)

20151101_142129W

I usually print out a couple of pages of tea facts on filly stationery to put in the little gift packages for the guests.

20151101_141542W

Since I don’t know how to link a document for download yet, I’ll put them at the end of the post and you can copy them for your own party if you like. Have fun!

Now, getting back to the card…

Bonus: Fun tea facts and uses

Please note: All of the information below was gathered from various sources and is provided for informational purposes only. None of it is intended for medicinal purposes nor is it guaranteed by dannscraftingwhims.

With a little bit of know how you can brew a superb cup of tea.

Bring fresh cold water to a full boil for Black teas, Herbals, Tisanes and some Oolongs. Use water that is just below boiling for Whites, Greens and Darjeelings. Using a teaspoon, (which is the perfect tool for measuring tea), measure one level teaspoon of loose tea for each cup. Pour the prepared water over the tea. Steep according to the brewing instructions below, or to your own personal taste. Enjoy!

                    Water Temp / Steep Time

  • White tea 180F (pre-boil) 3-5 minutes
  • Green Tea 180F (pre-boil) 1-2 minutes
  • Oolong Tea 180-212F 2-5 minutes
  • Black Tea 212F 3-5 minutes
  • Herbals& Tisanes 212F 5-7 minutes
  • Rooibos 212F 5-10 minutes

** Most Green and White teas taste better after steeping for only 1 to 2 minutes and can usually be infused multiple times. Over-steeping can cause the tea to taste bitter.

** Darjeelings, with their delicate, fruity aroma can quickly become bitter and should usually not be infused for more than 3 minutes. Fifteen seconds more or less can make a huge difference in taste. Also, keep water just under a boil.

**When preparing Oolongs “washing” the leaves is common in Asian cultures–the thought is that the first washing preps the leaves for the first brewing. Hot water is very quickly swirled over the leaves and then poured off before adding more water to steep the tea.

Preparing a good cup of loose-leaved tea is neither difficult nor time consuming. The human palate is much more sensitive to moderately warm beverages than to very hot ones. Therefore, please have the patience to let the tea cool until you can comfortably touch the cup.

Helpful uses for tea and tea bags

1. Clean carpets: Clean up musty, dirty carpets by sprinkling dry, used green tea leaves on the carpet. Let them work their magic for about 10 minutes and then vacuum them up. Delicate Persian and Oriental rugs can also benefit from a sprinkling of tea leaves. In this case, sprinkle nearly dry, used whole tea leaves on the rugs, and gently sweep them away.

2. Shine wood floors: The tannins in black tea can help shine and color hardwood flooring. Follow your regular floor cleaning routine by carefully rubbing some brewed tea into the floor (don’t use too much water on hardwood flooring) and letting it air dry.

3. Polish furniture: Brewed tea also can help clean and shine wood furniture. The tannins in tea will re-color light spots and scratches in wood surfaces. Dip a soft cloth in a small amount of strongly-brewed tea, and use it to wipe down scratched tables, chairs, and more. Woodworker Jim McNamara suggested using “regular orange pekoe (Lipton’s) or other dark tea” in Woodworker’s Gazette.

4. Clean mirrors and windows: Tea can remove stubborn, greasy fingerprints from glass, and make it sparkle. Simply rub a damp teabag on the glass or fill a spray bottle with brewed tea.

5. Clean toilet stains: Rumor has it that used tea leaves can magically remove stubborn stains in the bottom of the toilet bowl. Just leave them in the toilet for several hours, then flush the toilet and brush the bowl.

6. Eliminate odors: The herbs and flowers in used herbal tea bags may have run out of flavor, but they often still have a good scent. Dry out herbal tea bags and add to potpourri or scented sachets. Likewise, you can freshen up the car without a chemical-laden commercial air freshener. Put lavender tea or other soothing herbal tea in a bag under the seat to fight odors. Rinse your hands with tea after eating or preparing fish (or other stinky foods) to eliminate odors. Instead of baking soda (or maybe in addition), try used tea bags in the fridge to absorb odors. Likewise, used tea leaves can help deodorize litter boxes when mixed into the litter. Dry, green tea leaves are recommended.

7. Soothe sunburn:  Tea can soothe sunburns and other minor burns. Dr. Oz suggests sponging sunburned skin with “cooled chamomile tea” for its anti-inflammatory effect. Don’t try this if skin is broken. For full-body sunburn, soak in a tea bath.

8. Soothe tired eyes: Warm, wet tea bags can reduce puffiness and soothe pain around tired eyes — and tea bags on your eyes look a little less ridiculous than cucumber slices. You can also use warm, wet teabags as a compress to soothe the pain of a sty.

9. Dental use:  After a tooth extraction or when an older child loses a tooth, try putting a cold, wet tea bag in the mouth where the tooth was lost and bite down on it. According to the Cleveland Clinic, “The tannic acid in tea helps healing blood clots to form (blood clots function similarly to a scab on an open wound). It can reduce bleeding and soothe pain.” Similarly, toothaches and other mouth pain can be soothed with a rinse of antiseptic peppermint tea mixed with a little salt

10. Shine dry hair: Brewed tea makes a good conditioner for dry hair. Rinse with (unsweetened) tea and leave to dry for a while and then rinse again with water.

Thinking of You Fish Bowl – Cat Lovers Hop Finale + Blog Candy

Here we go… the grand finale of the Cat Lovers Hop! It has been a fun week of all things feline!

2015HerPeacefulGarden

Jamis, at Her Peaceful Garden, organized this fun hop and she and her four-legged friends deserve a huge round of applause, as do all of the fab sponsors!! Raise your paw if you agree!

20150806_153944aW

(By the way, this paw belongs to Charlie, my friend’s Main Coon cat. If you want to see the rest of him, you can check out the post HERE)

I have a fun Thinking of You card for today:

20151025-203322aW

Here it is open. I really love that adorable kitty by Stampendous! And I think it’s funny that he’s looking at the fish and ‘thinking of you.’ lol! I debated stamping Thinking of You again on the inside to match up, but decided that would leave me with little room to write a message, so left it as is.

20151025_203545aW

This was my first attempt at coloring on acetate with Copic markers. It was a learning experience! Since the ink sits on top of the acetate, they do not blend. You can, however, get some neat texture with a little practice.

20151017_095656aW

Unfortunately my first attempt was too dark and you couldn’t see the cat very well through the fish bowl. Back to the drawing board!

The other thing you have to remember when using Copics on acetate is that the colors come out MUCH lighter than the do on paper. It took me several tries to get them dark enough to be seen.

20151017_115645aW 20151017_141559aW

20151017_220420aW

This time I put Glossy Accets over it for water and it turned out MUCH better. Of course had I wanted NO bubbles, there would have been oodles of ’em. There were still a few and they look terrific.

20151016_183840aW

I put glossy accents on the cat’s eyes, too for a little more realism. You can’t hardly tell in the pictures, but once I added the Distress Inks, I sprinkled some water over the card, so there are water spots as if someone’s naughty little paw has been splashing around in the water!

Well, hello there! Are you still sticking around?! I reckon you – like your four legged furry friends – think you deserve a treat, eh?! I DO have another small blog candy package up for grabs:

20151025_220928a

A ‘Meow!’ Cat magnet, a foot of paw print ribbon (yes, I DO see the irony in that!) and a couple of kitty embellishments for your next cat card.

If you’d like to have a chance at winning this little package, pay close attention: Leave ONE comment on this post telling me: What’s the most cats you’ve had at one time? (I think Janis will win in quantity, but the drawing will be random!). You must leave your comment before 11:59 p.m. PACIFIC time, Sunday, November 1, 2015. If you don’t tell me the highest number of cats you’ve ever had, I’ll assume you’re not interested in the blog candy. If you are (or become) a follower of this blog, you can make a SECOND comment telling me so for an additional entry. On November 2, 2015 I will use Mr. Random org to draw a winner from the comments that qualify and TRY to announce it here on the blog. I will be in an area with spotty internet, so if there is no announcement on November 2nd, I will announce the winner on November 10, 2015. The winner will have 72 hours to contact me with their snail-mail address or another winner will be chosen.

Well, it’s been a fun week I hope you enjoyed your visits here and hope to see you again! I’ll sign off now as Tigger would:

Dandelion Wishes – Cat Lovers Hop

Popping back in with…. you guessed it! Another kitty card! >^.^<

20151025_210043aW

This Wild Rose Studio stamp is just TOO cute, don’t you think? I love how those Crystal Ice Ice Stickles shine!! Of course I know an aunt of mine who would not be happy if she had dandelions that big in her yard! (I know you’re reading this and giggling, Aunt M! wink-wink)

I had one small problem when I went to put it on the card… the die was a smidge too big! So I snipped off the ‘finials’ and put some pearls on and if I hadn’t’ve told you, you probably wouldn’t’ve noticed, would you? : )

(Sorry, some day I will learn to resize my images for optimal uploading without losing resolution. sigh) And here’s the inside :

Art Impressions these cute little kitties so that they can be put together front and back. I cut under their paws before putting them together so they would stack better.

For today’s funnies, I thought I’d give a nod to those who are both SciFi & Cat Lovers:

1026Spock   1026LLP

Anyone remember Data’s genius ‘Ode to Spot’?

Felis Catus -is your taxonomic nomenclature

An endothermic quadruped, carniverous by nature?

Your visual, olfactory, and auditory senses

Contribute to your hunting skills and natural defenses.

I find myself intrigued by your sub-vocal oscillations –

A singular development of cat communications

That obviates your basic hedonistic predilection

For a rhythmic stroking of your fur to demonstrate affection.

A tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents –

You would not be so agile if you lacked its counterbalance.

And when not being utilized to aid in locomotion,

It often serves to illustrate the state of your emotion.

Oh, Spot, the complex levels of behavior you display

Denote a fairly well developed cognitive array.

And though you are not sentient, Spot, and do not comprehend…

I nonetheless consider you a true and valued friend!

DrWhoWithCats did a great job of photoshopping T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats into River Song’s hand! Although I’m fonder of the older cover – probably because they’re a cool stack of cats in hats:

1026OldPossumsBook1

Ok, I’ve rambled on so much that most of you now wish you had a time machine to go back and recapture the 5 minutes of your life that you just lost with this nonsense! I’ll probably be back later today with a second card.

Live long and pawspurr!

Allons-y!

Waiting on Snail Mail – Cat Lovers Hop

Can you guess what kind of card I’ll be posting this evening? Yep! Another Kitty card!

Let’s start first with a question: why are male cats called Tomcats?

Perhaps it was so they wouldn’t be confused with MAIL cats, like this one:

20151025_205312aW

Oh, I know that was a groaner of a joke. Sorry! I get silly this time of day. It’s so hard to get a decent pic of cards with sequins! Let me know if you have found any tricks that work for that. I love this stamp of the kitty waiting around for snail mail! … Or was the kitty himself sent via special delivery? The flag is up, so maybe he’s wanting to go on a trip!

squeee… I was posting this on Instagram and only then happened to notice how the far edged of the bracket border die kind of look like kitties!! Do you see it?!!

Another example of Pareidolia  the human ability to see shapes or make pictures out of randomness

I HAVE to break away on another kitty tangent and show you this ADORABLE Britto style felt glasses case one of my talented friends made:

20150719_140237aW

Isn’t it just adorable?! You can find more of her jewelry making talent at wireandwings.com Speaking of adorable… in case you missed it, check out her mom’s Main Coon Cat, Charlie, that I featured a while back on my blog HERE.

Since you’ve been enjoying my little table scenes, I’ll keep ’em up. That little black kitty is a hand-painted trinket box someone brought me from Poland. So sweet!
