Friends Are Marshmallows in the Cocoa of Life Card

Hello, again! I’m back with another fun cocoa card:

20161213_185023

I love that sweet sentiment: Friends are marshmallows in the cocoa of life!

The layers were inspired by Kraftin’ Kimmie’s December Layout (you KNOW they didn’t come from plain Jane me!) and the colors came from Simon Says Stamp’s Wednesday Challenge: Ice Inspiration:

Did you know how easy it is to DIY your own glitter cardstock colors if you don’t have the right one? I just took a Copic marker to some gold glitter cardstock and instantly had the olive color I needed:

I also added some bling to the girls’ hair ornaments and mugs with a Spectrum Noir Sparkle Pen. Oh, and I couldn’t resist adding chocolate mustaches from the cocoa!  : )

I even added a little decoration on the inside:

For those of you not interested in the details, feel free to scroll on to the end, I won’t be offended. ; )

Coloring this was a learning experience as those of you who have been following it on Instagram know. It was the first time I’ve tried doing a blonde with Copics.

20150602_220940aW

After I got her done, I realized I wanted a rich blue watercolor background. She wasn’t on watercolor paper, so I knew the ink would absorb to a lighter color, but  I decided to try.

20150604_185035aW

First I masked her off with Fineline Masking Fluid. Being Miss Frugal, I only outlined her to keep the watercolor from intruding into the already colored area. The mask goes on green, then turns clearish as it dries and rubs off when you’re done. I found out later why the pros mask the entire image… it DOES lift a tiny bit of the color. : (

Next I grabbed my Yasutomo metallic watercolors and put a wash of the darkest blue on. I knew they’d be lighter, but was highly disappointed with how light…

20150604_193520aW

I was recently given a set of Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolors that everyone has been raving about. I really wanted to play around a bit and get better at water coloring before using them, but I wanted my bold blue background, so pulled them out…

20150604_194400aW

No wonder everyone raves about them! The happy accident that I couldn’t catch on camera is that the metallic Yasutomo mixed in and gives it a nice shimmer. It makes me giggle when I looked at her in this pic as it looks like she’d decided to start not just a facial, but a whole body mask… hmmm… wonder if… nah! Hahaha!

Once dry, I started rubbing off the mask… Unfortunately the picture doesn’t capture how it lightened the coloring. It was easy to fix, though. Just had to take the Copic markers back over those areas and blend.

20150604_194611aW

I also added in a little bit of steam from the cup. : )

Put it all together following the sketch from Kraftin’ Kimmie Stamps and added the fun embossed sentiment from Ms. Kimm Creates: Daily Brew… it was Blog candy I won from the Spring Coffee Lovers Blog Hop… thanks again, Holly of KopyKat Creations!

Shining Friends Card

It’s taken a few days to finish, but I’m finally back with another of those amazing starry universe backgrounds I made. This time with some Kraftin’ Kimmie stamps…

20150406_201746aW (click on photo to enlarge)

To recap how the starry universe background was made…

I referred to this video’s galaxy background technique and used the following Ranger Tim Holtz Distress Paints on black cardstock:

Antique Linen
Chipped Sapphire
Peacock Feathers
Picked Raspberry
Spun Sugar
Weathered Wood

Dylusions ink spray white linen

After I had it done to my liking, I saw this blog post and thought it looked SO much better with the gold, which gave more of a nebula look. So I added some Martha Stewart Crafts Multi-Surface Metallic Acrylic Craft Paint in Yellow Gold & Titanium.
Next I stamped Kraftin’ Kimmie’s Gaia in Versamark ink on white tissue paper, covered with Recollections Ebony Detail Embossing Powder and heat set. I then colored just Gaia, using the following Tombow Dual Brush Pens: 673 Orchid, 676 Royal Purple, 685 Deep Magenta, 850 Flesh, 942 Tan, N65 Cool Gray 5, N89 Warm Gray 1
Since I didn’t get the expected result of the tissue paper blending into the background last time, I fussy cut around her right at the edge of the embossing. This time, however, I used Royal Coat Clear Decoupage Finish to attach her, and I learned something…. I should have used this last week! This time the tissue paper DID disappear into the background. So much so, that her eyes and face looked rather weird with the stars shining through them! Argh! Murphy’s Law!! (Now, if I’d’ve made her blonde… they always say we blondes are spacy! lol!) To try to salvage her, I tried coloring over her with Prisamcolor colored pencils as best I could. She’s still a little blotchy, but passable, I think.
The sentiment, from Kraftin’ Kimmie’s Hello, Friend! set, was stamped with Versamark Ink, covered with Recollections Gold Detail Embossing Powder and heat set. The Gold showed up MUCH better than the silver I used last time. I recently snagged some Recollections Signature Mica and Ice Flakes on clearance at Michael’s, so I decided she needed to be catching a special star and used glossy accents to attach a couple of flakes just above her hands. I love how it shines extra bright! (If you enlarge the photo, you can see it.)

The panel was attached to a deep magenta card using Tombow Xtreme Permanent Adhesive.
This week’s Kraftin’ Kimmie Challenge #274 is: Decorate the Inside, so I opened the card up and added the full Gaia stamp and a sentiment from Kraftin’ Kimmie’s Rain or Shine! set. I decided to leave Gaia uncolored and just color the sentiment with Pebbles Inc. Chalks, Basic Brights…

I always like cards that are decorated inside, but rarely think to do it.

I’m glad you stopped by today… My world IS brighter because of you! : )
