Bear’s Paw Succulent and Hugs, Thinking of You, Paw-some Friend Cards

Hello all! I’ve found another old post in my ‘drafts’ folder and have finally gotten it polished off for you… These were some sweet gift sets I made up last year when I found some ADORABLE Bear’s Paw succulents and put them in some cute cactus shot glasses from Dollar Tree and paired them with some stuffed bears and a handmade card to make some sweet and encouraging gift sets for some beary pawsome friends. First up a set for a special couple needing encouragement:

Awww! That sweet Pink & Main bouquet on the front of the card is colored with some fabulous shimmery Shuttle Art Gel Pens and a hand-drawn edge.

The inside has some cute Pink & Main stamps to match the gift, too…

I’m just head-over-paws in love with those darling bear’s paw succulents (Cotyledon tomentosa)! Aren’t they just TOO cute?!!

Of course, this post was done in March last year (I TOLD you I was backlogged!). Today I stopped by mom and dad’s and saw how much they have grown in such a short time:

This set went to a single friend, so there’s just one bear inside…

Supplies used:

  • Pink & Main stamp sets: Fur Ever, Grandma’s Lace, Mini Faces Set 1, and Thinking of You Always
  • Shuttle Art Gel Pens

And, I had this darling interlocking ‘hugs’ card for another friend:

Supplies used:

  • Concord & 9th Hugs Card die
  • Concord & 9th Cuddles & Hugs stamp set
  • Essentials by Ellen All Inside stamp & die and Bear Hugs die
  • DCWV The Butterfly Garden stack cardstock
  • Hero Arts ombre ink pads: ombre dolphin ; pink to red;
  • Tsukineko Memento Rich Coocoa dye ink
  • Copic Markers C1 E 13, 33, 71; R20

I hope you enjoyed these Pawsitively darling little treats!

pps: UPDATE: Dad finished his radiation treatments Friday. YAY!! Doc said it’ll probably take a couple of weeks for the side effects to resolve. She’ll see him in 5 weeks and then order tests – likely a PET scan – to be done at 8-10 weeks. Meanwhile he’s to exercise, eat well, exercise and stay healthy so his body can clear out all the irradiated cells. We’re looking forward t a good report!

Hope you’re all staying healthy and sane in these crazy times.😉

DIY Upcycled Jewelry Box and Handmade Necklaces

Hello! I have a few minutes and needed a distraction from the many things still going on that are keeping me from doing much crafting of late, so I found myself digging through the older posts that have been pining away in my ‘drafts’ folder for ages. I think you’ll find this one interesting:

Occasionally I get requests from family for crafty solutions. Recently, mom asked me to cover a box that came with makeup in it and had a magnetic closure. She was using it for her jewelry and was tired of looking at the advertising. I hunted around my stash (aka hoard) for some paper that went with her bedroom decor and came across this cool DCWV adhesive fabric paper that I’d won from Christi’s Art Without Anxiety blog ages ago. (Thanks again, Christi!!) Fabric would give a nice, luxurious texture to the box and already adhesive backed is a huge plus!!

What I didn’t know is that what felt like heavy fabric was really the thick backing for the adhesive. The fabric was actually thin, almost like Washi tape. Since I needed to cover up the advertising, I just laid down some of the solid colors first. It took two layers to cover it well enough, but since it was adhesive, it went quickly.

I even pulled the decorative ribbon off of the paper packaging and used it… nothing goes to waste around here! I got those strings of pearl flowers over a decade ago at a garage sale. I think you’re getting the picture that I am S-L-O-W to use up my supplies.

The bottom of the box had a nice square of rose-gold foiling, but there was propaganda inside the square. so I just covered the inside right up to the foiling. The cloth paper also gives it some grip so it doesn’t slip around on mom’s dresser as much.

The inside of the box was already finished with a nice plain peach paper, so I just lined the bottom with a piece of Kunin eco-fi Classicfelt that I won from them ages ago – Thanks Kunin!!! (It amazes me that this felt is made from recycled plastic bottles… you’d never know it to feel it!!).

Materials used:

  • DCWV Adhesive Fabric Paper (Blue stack) (Christi from Art Without Anxiety 18 months ago)
  • Kunin Group eco-fi Rainbow Classicfelt – Walnut Brown (2016)
  • Sookwang Scor-Tape
  • E6000 adhesive
  • Misc strand of pearl flowers
  • Ellen Tracy makeup box with magnetic closure

Now… What to put inside this sweet little box? Well, she had a lovely long strand of black pearls her sister had given her, but they were too long, so I re-strung them and took the extras and made a matching necklace and earrings for her…

And she had recently admired this pink necklace I’d made, so it went in the box, too…

She was tickled pink! I hope you’ve liked seeing it, too. Thanks for stopping by today!

Until the next time I can root through those dust drafts from last year for another post,

– D.Ann

pps… As far as our current trials go, no real updates since I last reported. Dad meets again with the radiation oncologist at UM Sylvester next week. We’re hoping that means they’re progressing and about ready to schedule him. Thanks, again, for all your well wishes!! Stay safe and wash those hands!! : )

2019 Cat Lovers Hop Crafty Cat Card and The Gray Muse Enamel Pin Giveaway

**** edited to note: giveaway now closed****

Hello and welcome to the 2019 Cat Lovers Hop celebrating our 5th year – MEOWZA!! Paws up to Janis, who puts loads of hard work into putting this hop together for us each year!!!

Unfortunately I won’t have as many posts as I’d planned for you this year (see previous post for deets), but I do have at least one card and a fabulous giveaway sponsored by Rubeena at The Gray Muse for you at the end of this post. In fact, I used her fun new Cats in the Craft Room stamp set to create a card for my dad who just got home from the hospital:

I wanted the front to rouse curiosity, so I cut out the cat that’s coloring and had him peeking into the ‘window’ with no sentiment

On the reverse side I found kitty on the craft mat in the same set that pretty nearly fits the head size and stamped it on the back for the face. The kitty in the CRAFTS box (that’s FTs, not Ps) in the set provided the paws… I just cut them out and folded them over the edge before gluing down the cat.

To give depth to the inside, I stamped the cat drawing 4 times and cut out each ‘page’, distressed the edges and then layered them exactly as the stamp, with the kitty on top. Then I drew thought bubbles to the stamped sentiments and wrote in my explanation of the scene below (now you know why I prefer using stamps!! lol!).

This card says everything I wanted to say! I’m SO happy that Rubeena has branched out into stamps! The Gray Muse is most famous for her fun enamel pins. Some are true-isms like this one: We rise by lifting others!

Supplies:

  • The Gray Muse Cats In the Craft Room stamp set
  • Spellbinders Gold Labels 4 dies
  • DCWV Mercury Glass Stack & Glitzy Glitter Stack
  • AC Cardsctock glitter card base
  • Core’dinations white card stock
  • Tsukineko Memento dye ink Tuxedo Black
  • Tsukineko Versamagic chalk ink Red Magic
  • Marvy Le Plume II pen #1122
  • Kaiser Craft Neon Gel pens
  • The Paper Studio Gemstones
  • Sookwang Scor-tape
  • Aleene’s Original Tacky Glue

Wake Up Brave ‘Floating’ Masculine Card and Personal Update

Hello! It sure has been a long time!!

Many thanks to those of you who have written inquiring why I’ve been away so long and then sent encouraging notes!! My heart always swells with your kindness!!

For those of you unaware, it’s been a rough few months: It started with the 40 year concrete reformation on my building that required everything off my patio for a few months… no small feat as my patio is about 1/2 the size of my efficiency! That left me with just a path from the kitchen to my bed and hardly any room to turn around, let alone craft. Then we decided to evacuate with Dorian as having gone through Andrew and Wilma taught us we never want to risk Cat 4/5 storms if at all possible. I sure feel for the folks in the Bahamas!! One small wobble and that could have been us. To top it off there have been some major family and personal health issues. As you know, it’s hard enough for me to keep up when life is ‘normal’ let alone upside-down. Despite all of that, I DO have a few posts back-logged and will post them as I can.

Enough about me. I wanted return by sharing with you this masculine ‘floating’ see-through Wake Up Brave card I made for my father who has just been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer (he starts chemo tomorrow):

Supplies used:

  • Altenew Dodec cover die
  • Spellbinders Labels 18 dies
  • DCWV Shimmer Stack cardstock
  • Sookwang Scor-tape
  • Metal token from Hobby Lobby
  • Acetate repurposed from packaging

May we all Wake Up Brave as we face each day!

I intend to be back in time for the Cat Lovers Hop (5th year!) coming up the 21st (if not before). See you there!!

Hugs to you all and thanks for your continued support!

Darling House Mouse Cards

Hello and welcome! Today I have a set of darling House Mouse cards to share with you.

If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I’ve been trying to keep up with #TheDailyMarker30Day coloring challenge this month. This time around I’ve tried to stretch my coloring skills, and ventured into doing some skies with Copic markers.

Previously, after finishing coloring the main image in Copics, I’ve used chalks for the sky because I would get streaks and unevenness trying to do a sky with Copic markers. I think I’m finally getting the hang of it! On this first card I was also pleased to get a bit of reflection of the walnut in the water, with a natural ripple look, too:

Love the sheen of these DCWV Shimmer Stack papers!! For the inside, I dry embossed the dye (you’ll see it better in the next cards) and used the cutout center as a decorative element:

On the second card, I added some rain to the sky. Here in Florida, it can be both rainy and sunny with a blue sky while raining, rain on one side of the street, but not the other, etc., so I didn’t feel like I needed clouds. I didn’t have a good terracotta color in my Copic collection, but I found that RV 34 and R22 mix together nicely for a close match.

Since part of the die impression reminds me of suns, I ran over the raised ‘suns’ with some yellow chalk and added this little guy celebrating, with my own sentiment:

For the final card, I decided to switch the ice cream color from pink to strawberry-flavored red to match the cardstock. The House Mouse stamps have names for most all of their critters. The bunnies are Hop-it and Itty Bit. I love that little Itty Bit fell asleep in a sugar coma before he got his face and paws cleaned off! : ) I also like that the frame die kind of reminds me of a waffle cone pattern! Since my hands were actually steady today, I took a chance on writing my own sentiment:

Here’s the inside:

Spellbinders Purrfect-ly Elegant Cats Anniversary Card

Hello and welcome to day two of the 2018 Cat Lovers Hop!

Today I have another fab giveaway for you, so be sure to read to the end. I thought this lovely pair of cats would make a sweet anniversary card for my feline-loving friends. Entwined tails are definitely a hallmark of ktty antics, perfect for the current Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge.

The heart was originally gold, too (somehow I lost the pic), but it seemed overwhelming, so I broke it up by using a Copic marker to change it to red. I like that it kept its shine.

For the inside and the envelope, I just embossed the dies. In the picture you can see the embossing on the card a little better because I highlighted it a bit with some chalks. In real life, the tactile feel of the embossing adds elegance to the card.

Supplies:

  • Spellbinders Purrfect, Pawing Around & Bella Rose Lattice Layering Frame dies
  • DCWV chalkboard & shimmer stacks
  • Recollections 110# cream cardstock
  • Spellbinders Platinum Pack 3 poster board – gold
  • Copic marker R29
  • Pebbles, Inc. Pearlescent Chalks Jewel Tones
  • Simply Defined Double Sided Adhesive & Stay-Put Glue
  • Misc. Ribbon

Art Impressions Kitten Vanity PopCard

Popping back in with a darling pop-up card for the Cat Lovers Hop.

The current Art Impressions Challenge is Add Embellishments. My embellishing starts with paper… I chose this weathered wood paper to look like the exterior of a house.

Note to self: don’t tack down the bottom of the background paper on the front of the card  until AFTER cutting the slits for pop-up mechanism… BELIEVE me, it’s better!! : )

On the ‘wall’ I hung some Graphic 45 ‘pictures’ and there are ribbon ‘curtains.’ I love the realistic antics of these stamped kittens whether they’re getting into everything or snoozing away!! A perfect fit for the Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge: Animal Antics and the Lost Coast Designs & Carmen’s Veranda Challenge #63 Cats & Dogs!

There is some twine to make the yarn ball more realistic. For the ribbed ‘wood baseboards’, I took a thin strip of kraft paper and scored along it every 1/8″, then shaved an 1/8″ piece perpendicular to the scoring.

Add a few well placed “meows”, including one for the extra kitty who’s managed to get in behind the vanity, climb up the back, and is mischievously about to bat at the roses!

Embellishing also means bling… foil for the mirror, glossy accents for the vase and eyes and loads of Sparkle Pen to add shine to the purse, fur stole, hat and roses. Oh, and don’t forget to embellish the envelope with a few stamps, too. : )

Here’s a video of the card in action *click in the middle of the picture on the white arrow)

Hugs Card with Felt Bear

Hello and thanks for stopping by!

I needed a card for a family that is dear to my heart and worth their weight in gold. In fact, the last time we were at a gold mine, I got them a little gold to say how much I value their friendship. So I put together this card and gift set for them:

The ‘hu’ and ‘gs’ of the word hugs interlock to close the card. When you open it, there’s a bear inside and it says Big Hearts Deserve Big Hugs! Because I keep them close to my heart, the bear has the names of the family on his heart. Awww. With fall coming, as that felt bear gets ready to hibernate, he’s taking his treasures with him! I hand cut a little tail for the bear’s backside. Tip: I keep a bag for all felt scraps and thread pieces from art and sewing projects… they make great stuffing for small felt critters!

I love this pretty paper from DCWV! It’s foiled and most sheets go well with each other. Fall in Florida us when the flowers come back and these are in muted fall colors:

I fussy cut one of the butterflies and glued it to the h. here you can see the card opening

… and closed again. Such a clever die!

Supplies:

  • Concord & 9th Hugs Card die
  • Concord & 9th Cuddles & Hugs stamp set
  • Essentials by Ellen All Inside stamp & die and Bear Hugs die
  • Fiskars Friends Forever quotes stamp set
  • Spellbinders Gold Labels 4
  • DCWV The Butterfly Garden stack cardstock
  • Hero Arts ombre ink pads: ombre dolphin ; pink to red;
  • Tsukineko Memento Rich Coocoa dye ink
  • Copic Markers C1 E 13, 33, 71; R20
  • Pebbles inc., Classic Chalks Earthtone Shades
  • Aleene’s Original Tacky Glue
  • The Kunin Group Rainbow Classicfelt ecofi: Sandstone, Walnut Brown (and felt  and thread scraps to fill the bear)
  • Papertrey Ink felt: Raspberry Fizz
  • Artiste metallic floss – gold

Spellbinders & Sizzix Gift Sets – Ladies Purses & Shoes, Gents Bags & Shoes, and Lifesavers

Good morning, dear peeps! I hope you’re having a lovely weekend! This new treatment is giving me a few hours a day of relief from the constant migraines, that’s better than nothing. Hooray!

Nope. Not the Olympics yet…. coming soon! I’ve been working for some time on this current project and am excited to finally be able to show it to you. Every year there is a special meeting for our full-time local Bible teachers and this year I put together some sweet gift sets to let them know how much we love them. Here’s the spread:

Squee! Aren’t they the CUTEST?!! CVS recently had 90% off their candy, so I got chocolates and the lifesavers for a song.

To make the centerpiece, I took a foam half-circle for floral arrangements, poked holes in one end of the lifesaver rolls and folded the tip of a straw to fit up inside, then poked them into the foam base. I added a bow and an inflatable ring from the Dollar store and a little sign (in Portuguese) recognizing that they’re truly life savers!

For the gents, I put together these bags and shoes:

That orange-y leather look is common in Brazil and the embossed football paper and embossed dots gave it the perfect leather look.

They actually hold more than this, but the ladie’s purses only held this much, so to be fair, that’s what’s inside. The chocolates are heavy, so to help the bags stay closed, I added the leather straps and edges from Tim Holtz’ Vintage Valise Sizzix set to Elieen Hull’s Bag/Suitcase. The paper straps go completely around and slide through the front tabs.

The scripture on the shoes is Isaiah 52:7:  How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of the one bringing good news, The one proclaiming peace, The one bringing good news of something better, The one proclaiming salvation, The one saying to Zion: “Your God has become King!”

I love that there are some brads on the ends to add a little class. Aren’t those Spellbinders Gent’s Shoes super handsome?!! I wish I hadn’t glued down the tips of the tongues… next time I won’t so I can flip them up a bit!!

Let’s move on to the ladies’ purses. I didn’t have enough cardstock do do them matching and these gals love color, so this variety pack was perfect.

I just love pairing those sweet Spellbinders Couture Purses by Stacey Caron with Becca Feeken’s cute Ladies Shoes! When putting buttons on, just remember to put them far enough down for the latch mechanism to work.

I wanted each of these teachers to know that we take note of them, so I included a little note in each purse/bag saying “We all want to be like our God in Hebrews 6:10 (“For God is not unrighteous so as to forget your work and the love you showed for his name by ministering and continuing to minister to the holy ones.”) and, although we might not say it as much as we like: Than you for your fine work in our congregation!”

Materials used:

Gent’s bags & shoes:

  • Sizzix Scoreboards Bag, Suitcase die by Eileen Hull
  • Sizzix Vintage Valise die by Tim Holtz Alterations
  • Spellbinders Wedding Collection: Gents Shoe dies
  • Hero Arts dye ink: Mulled Wine (to distress and give the paper a more ‘worn leather’ look)
  • Bazzil Basics Paper Terra Cotta 2/ 12×12 sheet
  • The Paper Company Franchise Football  – note: I got 4 Pairs of gents shoes from one 12×12 sheet
  • Prism Embroidery Craft thread – FYI, one 10 yard skein did all 10 shoes with some left over However, I wasn’t able to get a double strand through my needle so it might take more if you use it as shown in Becca’s instruction video.
  • Aleene’s Original Tacky Glue
  • Misc. brads and chocolates (note… I highly recommend having extra chocolates on hand to fuel the crafter!! lol!)

Ladies’ purses and shoes:

  • Spellbinders Couture Purse Rouge Royale die by Stacey Caron
  • Spellbinders Wedding Collection: Ladies  Shoedies by Becca Feeken
  • DCWV Blossoms  Butterflies Stack – I was able to get one purse and a pair of shoes out of one 12″ x 12″ sheet even taking into account patterns.
  • Jessee James Dress It Up Vintage Pearls buttons
  • Recollections faux pearls

Another Art Impressions Humorous ICU Step Card

Hello and welcome back! I had my post-op follow up yesterday and all is proceeding well. I made another fun card for the surgeon and his staff…

This time I had a little more time to play around with the curtain to get it in shape. I think I like this version better than the one I showed you a few days ago. Even though it folds up uneven, it will probably be displayed open, so I made it come up even with the rest of the card – when open and looking straight on.

I gave the lady more blue hair as that’s the norm down in South Florida – as are both of their shapes. lol! And, of course, there’s lots of bling, glitter and gloss!

I love making him look embarrassed with red cheek and ears and his eyes bugging out!
