The Greatest of these is Love Layers of Floral Bookmarks & Swirly Heart Card

Hello, crafty peeps! Today I’d like to show you some sweet bookmarks and a card I recently made. This week my folks are attending a school for volunteer Bible Teachers. They’ve been volunteering full-time for the past 45 and 31 years, respectively. I was able to do it for 23 years before I became disabled. It’s a work that brings much joy!  I made them a little gift set of a heart shaped card and a bookmark for each of them to use during their week-long school:

and the back sides:I was pleased that the A Jillian Vance Design stamp and Swirling Heart die match the Spellbinders Layers of Flowers die perfectly — and they all fit on the Spellbinders Filigree Bookmark Tag, too! My folks liked them so much, they asked for a set to give to their classmates, choosing these colors:

One tip – because I used double sided tape on the cardstock for the Layers of Flowers and cut them on a Precision Base Plate, they tended to slip and slide. The solution, which you may know -and I may have, too, but forgot, was to turn the die so that just a corner hit the rollers first:

Since I used double sided tape, I had the leftover pieces of the die cuts and decided to see what they’d look like on another bookmark. I had a piece of watercolor resist that I wasn’t happy with, so I decided to use it as the background since most of it would be covered by the leftover die cuts.

I had used Tombow dueal brush pens and some Inkadinkado Stamps on it, but the note of which ones was no longer with the piece. I guess I should paperclip Post-It notes for added insurance!

I clipped a die cut to the cardstock and put the pieces back in their respective spots, then pulled away the die cut template and cut the cardstock and put it on the bookmark:

To give it a little umph, I hit the solid die cut remnants with a Crystal Clear Sparkle Pen by Spectrum Noir. Here you can see the shimmer better:

Not bad, but it was tedious work! At least I know it’s an option if I want to have 0 waste. Here’s one last look at the front and back of the bookmarks:

Supplies:

  • A Jullian Vance Love Scripture Bookmark stamp set & Swirly Heart die
  • Spellbinders Vintage Elegance Filigree Bookmark Tag die by Becca Feeken
  • Spellbinders Thoughtful Expressions Layers of Flowers dies by Marissa Job

  • Recollections Chipboard (the base of the guys’s bookmarks)
  • The Fine Touch gold poster board (the base of the gals’ bookmarks & the card)

Geometrics Fancy Cats Cards

The time has come for my final post of the Cat Lovers Hop. Wahhh! But, Wahoo-kachoo! We just passed our peak number of 149 entries from last year!!

It has been a week of the highest quality with the 4c’s … Cats, Coffee, Crafting & Chocolate. We make clarity, cut, color and carat jealous! Lol! (BTW: If you want some better chuckles, be sure to read to the very end!)

I’m closing with this pair of elegant and fun cards:

(Special thanks to my aunt for making that gorgeous cross-stitched kitty and orchid!)

I love how well that embossing folder goes with the geometric ‘ball’, don’t you?!

And on the inside are these cute bookmarks:

Since I cut the cats as a pair, it was easy to mix & match the pieces for a second card:

For the bookmark on this one, I cut a second one out of the god cardstock, but put the paper in reverse and glued them together so both the front and back are gold.

Which do YOU prefer? I kind of lean toward the black background.

Materials used:

  • Penny Black dies: Fancy Cat, Geometrics & Bookmark Tab
  • Penny Black Nine Lives Stamp set (sentiment)
  • We R Memory Keepers Sequence embossing folder
  • Core’dinations cardstock: black, white & green
  • Colorbok Shiny Gold Metallc Paper
  • The Paper Company Black Glimmer paper
  • Recollections Glitter Paper: Snow
  • Tsukineko Versamark ink
  • Inkadinkado embossing powders: black & linen white
  • Copic marker: RV02
  • Sakura Pigma Micron archival ink black 005

Okay, it’s time for the final hint for my Blog Candy Giveaway games from THIS post.  Although you can only count it once, this archaic four-letter-word, meaning ‘a dainty or choice food, a delicacy’ can be found 6 times in the puzzle. Still having trouble? No worries, you will still get entries for the Bonus questions, whether or not you get the answers to #1 and #2 correct. Have fun!

Also: if any of you early birds have found some words you missed with the clues the past few posts and want to change your answer to #1, for the early bird may get the worm, but the late cat gets both. Lol! This morning I received the first correct answer to #1 and #3. Many of you mamaged to get #2 already. If anyone wants to change their answers, you still have time to resubmit a revised answer. : ) You have until 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time, Sunday, October 29, 2017 to finish up and submit your final answers via e-mail. Don’t forget to check back on Monday, October 30, 2017 – hopefully, before noon PACIFIC time for my winners and answers post.

Note: If Potential Tropical Cyclone 18 (likely to be named Tropical Storm Philippe) continues as predicted, we will have winds and up to 8″ of rain tonight and tomorrow. This usually wouldn’t be a problem, but coming on the heels of Irma, who knows what the power lines here will do. (friends just a couple of miles from me were out of electric a whole week (which sounds like nothing compared to the Keys and Caribbean).) Anyway, if my post happens to be late, you’ll know why. Best way not to miss it: subscribe to follow my blog!

It’s been a wonderful hop and my mind is already spinning with ideas for next year’s hop. (No hard puzzles, I promise!) Hopefully I’ll see you all back here way before then. Thanks for stopping by and enjoy the funnies below!

Warm, furry hugs,

~D.Ann

Actually – that’s our hop host Janis with her clowder of 18… I just Photoshopped my Bitmoji avatar in the picture. Lol!

I thought I’d close with a few fun things I recently found while surfing the net:

Stamp-a-Faire 2017 – Faux Leather Bookmarks

Hello dear peeps! Hard to believe a month has slipped by since I was last able to post. I do have another big project I’ve done, but it will be posted later. For now, Papertrey Ink‘s annual Stamp-a-Faire event is going on and, although I couldn’t participate in every challenge this year, I did pick a couple I found particularly interesting. Since it is Papertrey Ink’s 10th Anniversary, their theme this year focused on the traditional gifts of the first 10 wedding anniversaries… adapted for paper crafting. My first project is from the 3rd anniversary tradition: Leather. I made this pair of faux leather bookmarks for a studious couple – who celebrated their 3rd anniversary 50 years ago:

Hard to believe they’re made out of paper! If you’ve never tried this technique, I encourage you to try it. It’s easy and even feels like leather! Here’s the back:

Ashley gives a terrific tutorial HERE, so I won’t repeat how to do this easy technique that gives such terrific results. I will give one reminder that I obviously needed:

Although it looks and feels like leather, remember this is PAPER and isn’t as strong as leather!

I pulled my tassels a little too tight on the feminine version and ripped right through the paper, so I had to re-die cut the end, which just made it a bit shorter… which is kind of cute since the wife IS shorter than the husband! I also covered hers with a thin layer of school glue hoping to seal it and make it a little bit stiffer. It left a shiny look that I didn’t want for the masculine bookmark and didn’t make it all that much stiffer anyway, so I didn’t do it on the other one.

Materials used:

  • Papertrey Ink We Go Together stamps
  • Papertrey Ink Swoosh & Simply Jane dies
  • Avery Elle bookmark die
  • Core’dinations cardstock kraft & black
  • Glycerine
  • Ranger Tim Holtz Distress Ink – Gathered Twigs
  • Tsukineko Memento dye ink – Tuxedo Black
  • Staples school glue
  • Misc. ribbon

I’m joining in the following challenges, click on any one to find out how you can join the fun:

Brace yourselves, I’ve been fiddling around on these projects since last Friday and will have several posts in a row again. See you again in a few minutes!

Lil Inker Designs Pawesome Kitty With Frap Interactive Thank You Card for Barista

This was supposed to be my grand finale card for tomorrow, but I was afraid I might not have time to post it, so it’s going up today. : ) Yes, there’s only just over a day left of the Spring Coffee Lovers Bloghop!

I’ve been showing my cards from the hop to my barista who is a sweetheart and always goes above and beyond with my green tea fraps, so I thought I’d make her a special little interactive thank you card:

I just LOVE this adorable Lil’ Inker Designs Kitty Hugger! (And that cool Starbucks holographic Miami Gift Card!)  The frap is just sitting there unattached and can be removed to read the Thank You note on the back. The kitty stands up by cutting a second one and gluing the heads together. (The arms and tail of the back one were removed so they wouldn’t be seen (making a scary mutant cat) and the parts that would be visible were colored in.)

I had a learning curve with coloring it tho… I was happy with how natural looking the paw pads I added turned out – until I folded them over and THEN remembered Copics bleed through. Akk! Usually it’s not a problem as I’ll be attaching what I color to something else, covering the back side. Well, just don’t think too much about how a kitty could be hugging something AND have his paw pads showing or you’ll get a brain cramp from the contortions. Lol!

There was a serendipitous moment, too… when my cutting pads are very well used, they tend to impress the markings on the back of what I’m cutting. Not usually a problem, but when I folded the arm over, I found that it added some cool fur-like texture!!

If you look closely at the pic above, you can see the ‘shelf’ I built on his left foot. I just added two pieces of cardstock straight across the ‘ankle’ and that gives the frap a shelf to rest on which, along with the bent paw, holds it in place until ready to be removed.

I wish you could see the frap in real life… It’s amazing! I colored the green tea part first, then added the Nuvo Fresh Snowfall Glitter accents and it looks nice and frosty! The whipped cream was done with a Viva Decor Perlen Pen and the straw was attached. Once dry, I die cut a piece of clear plastic from the packaging of one of my dies, lined it with Scor-tape and put it on top for a true plastic cup look.

The kitty does stand alone, but he can also sit on the gift card… one cool Miami cat!       That gives me an idea: he could be used later as a bookmark, too!

Since they were 25% off today (with Target’s Cartwheel app), I went over to get a frap, and hopefully get a pic of my barista with her gift,  but she was off today, so I just came home with a yummy pick-me-up for myself. (Nonfat milk and raspberry syrup instead of classic – yum!) I always get mine without whipped cream, but the card just looks cuter with it, don’tcha think?!

Supplies used:

  • Lil’ Inker Designs Kitty Hugger stamp and die set
  • Lil Inker Designs Coffee Talk stamp and die sets
  • Memento Tuxedo Black dye ink
  • Copic Markers: C1, 3, 5; E02; R20; RV02; YG61, 63
  • Tonic Studios Nuvo Glitter Accents: Fresh Snowfall
  • Viva Decor Perlen Pen – Ice White
  • Sookwang 2.5″ Scor-tape adhesive
  • Aleene’s Clear Gel Tacky Blue
  • Coredinations white and red cardstock
  • Misc. plastic packaging

I’m playing along with the following challenges… click on any one of them for more information on how you can join the fun…

It’s been a fun week. Thanks to everyone who was kind enough to stop by and leave some bloggie love!! I really appreciate you all!!

Alice in Wonderland Card and Bookmark With Felt Mad Hatter’s Hat

Welcome back for yet another project for the Spring Coffee Lovers Bloghop!

I have an amazing gift set to show you today, and I’ll warn you in advance that this will be a long post. If you only want to see the card, I won’t hold it against you if you scroll down to the end. : )

For those of you who are staying, here’s the Alice in Wonderland Card and Bookmark I made for a friend who loves the story that includes one of the most famous tea parties in literature:

And, yes, that’s a picture of the real Alice – Alice Liddell – who was the inspiration for Charles Dodson’s books (You might know Dodson by his pen name: Lewis Carroll).

In case you’re wondering, the smaller book is Alice’s Adventures Under Ground and the larger one is More Annotated Alice.

Let’s start with the Mad Hatter’s hat that I made from felt. Since I cut it freehand, rather than draw you a template, I took a picture on a grid so you could freehand your own.

There’s some extra felt for the top part to make it end up fatter than the bottom. Place a dot of Fabri-tac on the felt and start winding the felt around a headpin with a sequin on it (to keep it from pulling through the felt). You will want to leave enough room for the full width of the felt when you get there. Once finished, use a dab of glue to hold the end. Glue the smaller circle on top and trim to fit. Glue the larger circle on the bottom.

You will want to put your ‘sash’ of ribbon on first, before rolling the sides up and securing with a dot of glue. (Ask me how I know! Lol!!) Then shape the top of the headpin into a charm loop. There are plenty of tutorials on how to do this on the net.

I cut off some rounded head pins for the hatpins, printed out the chit to tuck under the band ,and put some small feathers in the opposite side to finish it off.

Materials used for the bookmark:

That rabbit is just a little something I found in a bin at Michaels, but what’s cool about him is that, in true Alice in Wonderland fashion, he will grow up to 5x his size if you put him in water and shrink back when dry. I just pierced his ears to add the jump rings and glued on the clock with E6000.

The ‘drink me’ potion is just a couple of drops of water and glitter in a green flask.

Some other things I altered for this bookmark…

The glass cat charm needed a grin and, since the glass accents are dimensional, I pulled out my Pebeo Cerne Relief and drew one in. Once dry, I gave him some pearly whites with a Viva Decor Perlen Pen.

the bookmark itself was textured silver.

I wanted a mossy ‘grouting’ and bright cobblestone look, but the alcohol ink kept bleeding onto the green patina I was using, so I ended up going with the bright textured interior.

Supplies used for the bookmark:

  • The Jewelry Shoppe findings: Textured Bookmark
    • Ranger Tim Holtz Adirondack Alcohol Ink – Wild Plum mixed with:
    • Ranger Vintaj Glaze gloss metal sealer

2016 Cat Lovers Hop

For today’s interview, I am delighted to have the darling lil BUB with us today:

20161027_bub2

This is her orchid impression. I think it’s a new family of orKITTYae… the FELINEopsis! Not to be confused with the CATTleyas. : )

For those of you who aren’t already one of her 1.4 million followers on Instagram, you can check out her story on her website by clicking HERE. She is a “perma-kitten”, which means she will stay kitten sized and maintain kitten-like features her entire life. (Personally, I’m a “perma-kid” which means I will stay a kid on the inside my entire life!) She is a published author, a talk show host, the star of an award winning documentary, created Lil BUB’s Big FUND for the ASPCA (the first national fund for special needs pets), and has helped raise over $300,000 for animals in need. A portion of every sale from her STORE full of BUB cuteness goes to this fund.

That’s one busy little kitty! We’re honored that she took the time from her busy schedule and chose to reply to one of the questions I sent her.

  • What is your favorite thing to do with paper?
    • Sleep on it.

        20161027_bub1

A true kitty, indeed!

Some of you may have the popular Weather Bug app on your phones. Did you know there’s a Weather BUB app?!! And it’s FREE! You can find it HERE.

In honor of lil BUB’s appearance today, I made this card with a removable Page Hugger bookmark on it:

It’s not often I do a CAS card, but I really wanted the bookmark to be the star of the show.

Spring Coffee Lovers Blog Hop Bookmark & MISTI

Hello and welcome! Today is the first day of the Spring Coffee Lovers Blog Hop.

20160318_CL

In last Winter’s hop there were over 600 projects linked up. This time there are over 50 Super Sponsors offering some terrific prizes, so come join the fun!

I’m starting out with a crazy bookmark:

20160318_111742aW

You may remember THIS POST, where I did some watercolor painting with Glimmer Mists and made some mosaic tiles from eggshells…

20160219_211033aW

When I was done, I took a manila tag and sopped up the leftover ink and had a pretty SPRING GREEN background waiting to be stamped and embellished. I then took my favorite tool – the MISTI (Most Incredible Stamp Tool Invented) and went to work.

20160317_215120aW

I love the MISTI because you can lay out your stamps and embellishments exactly where you want them, then close the lid and it picks up the stamp so you can ink it and put it right back down and stamp exactly where you wanted it.

20160317_215144aW

Another reason I love the MISTI is when you don’t get a clean impression the first time ’round – you just re-stamp until you’re satisfied. I can’t tell you how many projects got this far before I had my MISTI and I’d try my best to align the stamp, but it would be off, giving me a double impression and making me have to start over. That was SO frustrating! But NO more!!

20160317_215906aW 20160317_220138aW

It’s also great for mass-producing cards and getting perfect images on every one. (If you don’t have one yet, you might want to check out SoSuzyStamps – she’s even giving away a Mini Misti on her blog! (She’s also one of our Super Sponsors, thanks!))

Here’s a close-up of this crazy cat and you can see a bit of the shimmer on the tag. So is the feather her super cape? Did she down ALL those cups of coffee and then try to catch the family bird? That feather between her toes IS rather suspicious! I love that adorable stack of cups from STAMPlorations- Another of our Super Sponsors – thanks! That much coffee would also explain why her eyes are bugging out. lol!

20160318_093248aW

The coffee ‘beans’ were a thick application of Liquid Pearls. Before they were dry I just ran a fingernail down the center.

Materials used:

  • STAMPlorations COFFEE HAPPY stamp set
  • Stampers Anonymous Tim Holtz Crazy Cats stamp set
  • Sizzix Framelits Tim Holtz Crazy Cats dies
  • Darice embossing stencil Cat (paw print)
  • MISTI stamping tool
  • Ranger Inkssentials Craft Tags – Manila #5 size
  • Neenah Astroparche cardstock
  • Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists: Crushed Shells, Fairway, Forest Green, Gold, and Mustard Seed
  • Tim Holtz Idea-ology tissue tape – butterflies
  • Copic Markers: E13, 23, 33, 74, 79; R32; RV04; Y13; YG17
  • Pigma Micron pen 01 black
  • Ranger Inkssentials Glossy Accents
  • Ranger Liquid Pearls – dark chocolate
  • Art-C molding paste – black
  • Ranger Tim Holtz Distress Ink – Gathered Twigs
  • Kuretake Zig Wink of Luna – Gold & Green
  • Kuretake Zig Wink of Stella – clear
  • Aleene’s Tacky Glue
  • Misc. feathers and ribbon

Goodness… the list is longer than the tag itself! Haha! Or, ask the Brazilians say: ‘kkk!’ Which is an onomatopoeia for a little snicker sound… try it! Kkk!!

Onomatopoeia – ˌä-nə-ˌmä-tə-ˈpē-ə – the formation of a word from the vocal imitation of the sound associated with it. Like buzz or hiss.

I’m playing along in the following hops and challenges, in case you’d like to join the fun, just click on the name for the link:

Just a Little Something Candy Box and Bookmark Party Favors

I’ve been away… pictures coming soon! Meanwhile, when I returned this week, I was asked to get together some party favors for a Bible class. They wanted to give the students chocolates and something handmade. I had recently seen Heather Nichols’ bookmark (HERE) on the Papertrey Ink blog (HERE)…

That made me think a bookmark would make a nice gift for the students. I recently got a lovely Tattered Lace Floral Panel that I thought would make a pretty bookmark and be simple to put together. I love how the flower center and some of the leaves pop up for a bit of 3-d texture. Unfortunately, it didn’t fit my Papertrey Ink bookmark dies, so I just cut a frame to fit around it and printed the class info on the back.

I used Papertrey Ink’s Vintage Favor It Box die and Just a Little Something stamps to make little boxes to hold the Ghirardelli chocolates. Yep, chocolate is certain to be Just a Little Something to Make You Smile, don’t you think?!!

The bookmarks fit right inside the box for a sweet presentation…
