Star Trek Cats in a Galaxy Far, Far Away — Sci-Fi Mash-Up Card

Hello, again, dear cat loving peeps! The Cat Lovers Hop continues…

Wasn’t that just the coolest post by Mary from Wire and Wings?!! (HERE if you missed it.) We’ve been friends for decades. In fact, my dad was the minister who performed her wedding. It was quite a co-incidence that I had this card in the making at the same time she had that fabulous Cats in Space necklace in the making. You’re about to see why.

This is another geeky post for us sci-fi loving cat lovers. I didn’t know how large a group that encompasses until I happened to Google “Star Trek Cats” and also its sci-fi counterpart. I lost a few hours of my life watching hilarious videos (and some very well done ones, too). I’m not going to link to any here, lest you go there and get caught up and never return to finish this post! Brace yourselves for a feline fun sci-fi mash-up:

Aren’t those Star Trek Cat pins just the cutest?! I knew I had to get them for my friend, along with the R2D2 mints. (Enabler alert… you can find the pins on Amazon.)

Background picture credit: I got the Cat’s Paw Nebula picture from NASA’s site. You can read about it HERE.

To continue the sci-fi mash-up silliness, here’s what I wrote on the inside:

It wasn’t until I’d done the galaxy background and added the pins that I noticed the perfect placement with the center of the fabulous Time Warp stamp gave the hysterical look of a true GASEOUS ANOMALY … Is Mewster Spock giving the LL&P sign, or is he about to cover his nose?! LOL! I love the glimmery shine that the Distress Mica Spray gives to the background!!

To make the card thick enough to hide the pin backs, I layered 3 layers of Crafty Foam Tape around the galaxy piece. Since I only had white foam tape, I just ran over the edges with a black sharpie. I left the backs in the box so they wouldn’t get trapped inside the card. (I mention that because I almost left them on and would have been terribly irritated.) The tips of the pins are sitting on Crafty Foam tape so they don’t poke through.

For the front of this card, I used the Neat & Tangled Little Tangles Challenge 85 Sketch:

After doing the galaxy background, I had to find a white bright enough to stand out against the whites in the background. After trying all my white embossing powders, Brutus Monroe won. The A Long Time Ago sentiments didn’t have all the letters I wanted for the end line, so I had to try to hand letter it with an embossing pen… not too easy with my tremor, but it came close enough, I think. A black Pigma Micron Pen helped sharpen the letters a little.

Materials used:

  • Neat & Tangled: Time Warp and A Long Time Ago stamp sets
  • Tsukineko Versamark ink
  • Ranger Embossing Antiquities – Frosted Crystal
  • Ranger Inkssentials Embossing Pen – Black
  • Brutus Monroe Embossing Powder – Alabaster

  • Zig Wink of Luna pen – Gold

By the way: I’m a cardmaker, not a doctor! LOL!

  1. How adorable and clever to use those Star Trek kitties on a card. I know my daughter would love those as well. Might have to check into them since you let me know where they are found. Thanks.

  2. OMG, this is hilarious! Love the pins, the sentiment and the background, but the PLACEMENT of the background and your mention of the possible “gaseous anomaly” has tears literally rolling down my face. You two certainly are “bestest” of friends. Great minds and best friends certainly think alike. Fabulous! xxD dlmundinger(at)yahoo(dot)com USA

  3. Oh my gosh! This made me scream. I am not a nerd but I married one so I know all these references (including the gaseous anomaly–lol). I’m totally ordering those Star Trek pins right now. Hubby has a Sci Fi convention in a couple of weeks and he NEEDS a live long and pawsper pin on his name badge (he just doesn’t know it yet).

Also I put another Charles story in my comment for day 2.

  8. So I got the fabulous Star Trek cat pins in the mail yesterday and couldn’t wait to present them to hubby (you know, since he is a nerd and the other half of the crazy cat couple that we are). He was less than thrilled…. like I think he expected something better, like, I dunno, Captain Tight Pants’ autograph (on my boob, natch) or something.

    • ROFL!! Bwahahahaha! I may just bookmark this page and go read your comment whenever I need a good laugh! I would offer you a warm beverage, but it’d be cold by the time it got there, so I’ll make one for myself instead. Sci-fi geeks… whatcha gonna do with ’em? Just look at him and say: ‘Wanna play Rock-Paper-Scissors-Spock-Cat?!

  9. Thanks so much for the awesome card!!! Great minds… So amazing that we were not just thinking the same way but making for each other at the same time! I’ve put it on display in my nerd cave (office/library) along with some other ST, DW, SW items, including the R2D2. Tasty mints, too. 🙂 So much appreciate the beautiful sentiments inside as well.:) You’re the best friend a cat and SF loving girl could have!

One of the benefits of making comments several days late is that you get to read everyone else’s hilarious reactions, too!! You and Judy are a scream!!
D.Ann you did an awesome job with this card and that “gaseous anomaly” is stinkin’ funny!!!
I prob wouldn’t have noticed the spot-on positioning had you not mentioned it, but like Shona said now it’s the first thing I see!!!
Those ST cats are THE BEST!! Love TOS. Captain Tight Pants….oh, LOL!!! When I was growing up I loved them all. Several years ago I got the TOS seasons on DVD. So much fun!!! Except I don’t really like that cat episode. And the Tribbles are really kittens….everyone knows that. Or are they bunnies?
Thanks for sharing this great post and all the fun!!
Thank you also for joining in the #CatLoversHop2017!!!
