ADORNit ArtPlay Watercolor Experiment

Sheeee’s baaack! It’s hard to believe I haven’t posted anything since last year! Time flies!! : ) In between health issues, I’ve been busy trying to organize my crafting supplies and my place so I can work more efficiently. I may post some of the improvements later on. For now, I have a fun experiment to share with you.

The folks ADORNit were kind enough to send over some samples from their ArtPlay coloring books for me to play with.

Although I usually use Tombow or Copic markers to color, these are printed on watercolor paper, so I decided to experiment. Knowing that Tim Holtz’ Distress Inks by Ranger are bright and happy, I decided to start with them on my favorite of the bunch: Choose Happy. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to control the inks very well and they bled into each other leaving me decidedly UNhappy.

The great thing about art is that boo-boo’s are just opportunities to create something better so I fiddled around with various other mediums until I came up with a solution I liked…

Yep, a heavy dose of fabulously glittery Stickles can make a huge difference!

Next, I decided to try some Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolors on one of the samples:

Those holographic sequins are so hard to photograph! Adding some gold and white gel pen here and there and giving it some sparkling Wink of Stella helped this one, too…

Finally, I reached for something that gave me more control… Faber-Castell’s Aquarelle colored pencils. Once colored, I just went over them with a water brush to smooth the color out:

Still a little color bleeding, but not near as much!

Which one do YOU like best?

  1. Glad to see you back, my friend!!! Sorry you have had some health issues. How well I know how those can interfere with the crafting we want to be doing. Ugh. I, too, have been getting my crafty things organized (in my NEW craft room…Yay!!!) so I can find, I mean USE, them! lol….

I totally adore your bright, cheery coloring sheet cards!! I love every single one of them sooooo much!!! Even though you were unhappy about the color bleeding on the first attempt, I think the blended, watery effect is just beautiful!! Something about the simplicity of that before the Stickles really appeals to me. I really like the very last one for the same reason…..simple and so very, very pretty.

Thanks for showing us your projects. I love it when bloggers let us explore with them. Take care and have a wonderful New Year!!!
