Hello again! It’s time for a fun tea card for the Winter Coffee Lovers Blog Hop and the results of my experiment in making peppermint spoons:
A couple of weeks ago I saw a post about making your own peppermint spoons and since they ran out at Tuesday Morning, I decided to try it. You can read the instructions in original post on Jennifer’s blog HERE. She made hers in the oven, but I wanted to try them in the microwave. I also wanted just the bowl of the spoon as I usually use these for tea parties (see my post HERE, if you haven’t read about those yet) and the cups are small. So I smashed up a bunch of peppermint candies and filled my Wilton Silicone Candy Spoon Mold, putting some Celebrate It! Popsicle Sticks in some and leaving two 100% candy.
It took less than 20 seconds for the first one to start bubbling, and they each started
bubbling at different times, while the full one on the end never bubbled at all.
I kept adding more crushed candy a few seconds at a time, but the end results weren’t terrific. The one that never bubbled came out the best. The one next to it bubbled so much it lost its color and the bowls of the spoons ran on up the handles and wouldn’t look nice:
Now, my microwave is small, so it may not have the even distribution that a larger, more expensive model has, but I still recommend following the original instructions and making these in the oven! Now it’s time for me to take a break with my Chocolate Macadamia Nut tea and peppermint spoon dipped in chocolate and dunked in sprinkles!
One additional note for lovers of mint chocolate… My aunt told me about making brownies with a layer of Andes Creme de Menthe Chocolates – it sounded wonderful! Target had some brownie bites on sale and Andes chocolates were on sale, too, soooooo… If you put 1/2 a mint on a brownie bite and put it in the microwave 10-15 seconds… YUM!
Well, this IS supposed to be a CARD making post, so I’d best get to it, eh?! That fun wintry sea background was made by dry embossing soft aluminum.
I embossed the reverse side, then flipped it over and lightly sanded the raised areas to bring out the silvery white of the waves in the wintry sea.
I felt they needed a little bit more ‘foam’, so I added some Glass Bead Glitter Gel to the crests of the waves and even splashes some onto our intrepid penguins and their vessel. If you click on the picture you should be able to enlarge it and see the splashes.
I love that sentiment that we are all like tea bags: You don’t know how strong you are until you’ve been in a little hot water!
I can almost hear the penguins now:
Kowalski: Sir, How long do we stand here like this?
Skipper: Until we reach maximum coolness.
[beat]
Skipper: There it is!
Smile and wave, boys!

D.Ann……I can’t decide if the Coffee/Tea/Cocoa Lovers Hop is your true element or the Cat Lovers Hop. Your posts are just fabulous all the time, but you hit it out of the ballpark for these hops!!! I love how you have managed to combine the two themes and put a kitty in some of your projects.
